Characterization of Torrefied Biomass Pellets from Agricultural Residues for Solid Fuels CIGR Journal
HOMDOUNG, NIGRAN.
Torrefaction and densification are suitable techniques for upgrading solid biomass materials. They can improve the energy properties of solid fuels. The objective of this research was to evaluate changes in physico-chemical properties of agricultural residues (corn-cobs and rice husks) during torrefaction. Physical properties of the torrefied biomass pellets were analysed. The results showed that increasing the torrefaction temperature and time resulted in reduced moisture and volatile matter content of corn-cobs and rice husks. At the same time, fixed carbon, ash content and heating values were increased. The heating values of both torrefied fuels were in the range of 14.9–16.9 MJ/kg, increased by about 16 to 22% from the raw biomass. The optimum...

Development and performance evaluation of a piston type hydraulically operated briquetting machine with replaceable moulds CIGR Journal
Akogun, Opeyemi Ayodeji; Waheed, Mufutau Adekojo.
This study focuses on the development and performance evaluation of a piston type briquetting machine with replaceable moulds. The properties of the briquettes produced from cornhusk (CH), cassava peel (CP), sawdust (SD) at different torrefaction conditions and particle size less than 1.8 mm were studied with cassava starch as binder. The fuel application of the feedstock for co-firing in coal engines was evaluated by combustion indices. This machine has a replaceable cylindrical or square mould that could be used interchangeably. The machine has the capacity to produce 576 briquettes on an 8-hours operation while the biomass material flow rate for densification is 1.58 L/h. The highest maximum density of 1.09 g/cm3 was attained for cylindrical CP...

Factors affecting properties of fuel pellets from compaction of mixed biomass and waste plastics CIGR Journal
Auprakul, Unchana; Promwungkwa, Anucha; Tippayawong, Nakorn; Chaiklangmuang, Suparin.
The purpose of this research is to investigate densified solid fuel from mixed plastic wastes which were recovered from dumpsites. Corn stover was used as natural binder of the fuel. In this study, the corn stover can bind plastic materials into the fuel using compaction. The densification of mixed plastic wastes and corn stover was investigated at 150 MPa compression pressure. The size of pellet was 8 mm in diameter and 20 mm in length. The parameters effect on the fuel properties of this research were moisture content (5-20%w.b.), types of material, mixed plastic wastes and corn stover ratio (55:45, 65:35 and 75:25), and preheating temperatures (75 and 100°C). Results found that corn stover can improve chemical properties (reducing sulfur and chlorine...
